Year of death: March 31, 1917 Year of birth: Tempo 13.3.15 (1842.4.25) A Meiji period diplomat and Chinese scholar. Born in Kumamoto Prefecture. Given name Mitsuhiro and pen name Ii. During the Meiji Restoration, as a samurai of the Kumamoto domain, he worked hard for state affairs by domain orders, and served the Meiji government in the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1880 (Meiji 13), he became consul in Tianjin, and in 1882, he became minister to Korea, supporting the Korean enlightenment faction and was deeply involved in the Gapsin Coup (1884). After dealing with the aftermath of the coup, he resigned as minister the following year. He lectured on classics at the Imperial University, but later devoted himself to writing, receiving the Imperial Academy Prize in 1914 (Taisho 3) and becoming a doctor of literature.
