Nittaiji Temple

A temple located in Houou-cho, Chikusa-ku, Nagoya. It is an independent temple managed by 19 sects in rotation. Its mountain name is Kakuozan. The principal image was originally the Shaka Nyorai (Shaka Nyorai) of the Ben Chiang Sang Temple in Laos. In 1898 (Meiji 31), the remains of the true Buddha were excavated by the British sect William Pebbe in Piprahwa, northern India, and were divided and enshrined in England, India, and Thailand (then Siam). In 1900 (Meiji 33), the King of Thailand presented the Buddha's relics and a gilt bronze statue of the Buddha to a representative of the Japanese Buddhist Association. After returning home with the relics, a joint envoy from various Japanese Buddhist sects temporarily enshrined them at Myoho-in Temple in Kyoto, but in 1904, the various sects united to build Nissen-ji Temple (later renamed Nittai-ji Temple) on this site. The relics will be enshrined in a large Gandhara-style stone tower (a tower to enshrine the Buddha).

名古屋市千種(ちくさ)区法王町にある寺。各宗（19宗派）が輪番管理する単立寺院。山号は覚王山。本尊はもとラオスのベンチェンサン府大寺院の釈迦如来(しゃかにょらい)。1898年（明治31）北インドのピプラーワーでイギリスのウィリアム・ペッベが発掘した真実の釈尊(しゃくそん)の遺骨を、イギリス、インド、タイ（当時シャム）に分骨し祀(まつ)ったが、1900年（明治33）タイ国王により日本仏教会代表に仏舎利および金銅釈尊像が贈られた。日本仏教各宗合同の奉迎使は仏舎利を奉じて帰国後、京都妙法院に仮安置したが、04年、各宗連合でこの地に日暹(にっせん)寺（のち日泰寺と改称）を建立した。仏舎利はガンダーラ様式大石塔（奉安塔）に安置する。
