Corelli

Japanese:
Corelli
Italian composer and violinist. Also known as Corelli. Born in Fusignano, near Ravenna in northern Italy. He is believed to have received his first musical education in Faenza, and from the age of 13 he studied in Bologna, the center of ensemble music at the time. After 1775 he moved to Rome, where he gained fame as a composer and violinist. He died there. His works include six highly accomplished collections, including four sets of trio sonatas (see Sonatas), each with 12 pieces (two sets each of church sonatas and chamber sonatas), and twelve violin sonatas with basso continuo (Op. 5) and twelve concerti grosso (Op. 6). All of his works except for the concerto grosso (published in 1714) were published during his lifetime and were widely loved throughout Europe. All three fields showed the high level of achievement in instrumental music in the mid-Baroque period, and he left a great mark on the development of sonatas and concerto grosso. The most well-known works are the Variations on La Folia (op. 5-12) and the Christmas Concerto (op. 6-8). Among his pupils were FS Geminiani (1687-1762) and P. Locatelli (1695-1764). →Torelli/Leclerc →Related articles Scarlatti | Pastoral
