1855‐1926 A leader of the American labor and socialist movement. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Alsatian immigrants, Debs began working for the railroad at a young age and rose to prominence as a union activist. In 1893, he organized the American Railway Union (ARU), which was organized by industry. The following year, he led the ARU in supporting a strike at the Pullman Railroad Company. He was arrested and imprisoned, but this marked the beginning of a nationwide surge in Debs' popularity as a labor leader. During his months in prison, he learned about socialist thought from E. Bellamy to Marx, and later in 1897 he joined forces with Victor Berger to form the Social Democratic Party of America. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
