...The traditional school, on the other hand, is represented by Takahama Kyoshi, who defined haiku as "flower and bird poetry." According to the preface to "Kyoshi Kushu" (1928), "flower and bird poetry" refers to the satirizing of natural phenomena caused by the change of seasons, as well as the accompanying human phenomena, making haiku a classical seasonal poem. This view of haiku is supported by the theories of Yamamoto Kenkichi and others, who pointed out the three elements of haiku in his critique "Greetings and Humor" (1946): "humor," "greetings," and "improvisation."...
