A Japanese translation of a newspaper published at the end of the Edo period. It was the beginning of newspaper publishing in Japan. Since the beginning of the Edo period, the Dutch trading post in Nagasaki had presented the Edo Shogunate with overseas information brought by Dutch merchant ships every year. These were called "Dutch Rusetsu-goshi" (Holland Newspapers), but towards the end of the Ansei period, the newspaper was replaced by the "Javaansche Courant," an organ of the Dutch Government-General in Jakarta, which was translated by the Bansho Shirabesho (Investigative Bureau of Foreign Affairs) and submitted to the Shogunate authorities. In January 1862 (Bunkyu 2), the Shogunate had the official bookshop, Rousoukan, at Sannohashi on the Tatekawa River in Honjo, publish it under the title "Kanban Batahiya Shimbun."
