A term used in psychology. For example, when we hear the word "apple," we immediately know its meaning, but we do not visualize a round, red object or feel its sour taste in our mouths. The German psychologist N. Ach called this state of being aware of an object all at once, without the mediation of mental images or the senses, "consciousness." It is also known as "imageless thinking" or "non-intuitive thinking," and this pathological form is known as "substantial consciousness."
