The Suto (Mori) clan (Sudouji) of the Northern Fujiwara clan, surnamed Moribe. The clan began when Michikiyo, the grandson (or son, according to one theory) of Suto Sukekiyo, called himself Kamata Gon no Kami. It is said that Sukekiyo took the name Morito by combining his real surname Fujiwara with his foster father's surname Moribe, and it is also said that he took the name Suto because he was appointed Uma no Kami (chief horseman) as a reward for his military achievements under Minamoto no Yoriyoshi. His son Sukemichi served Yoriyoshi's son Yoshiie and played an active role in the Gosannen War (1083-87). Michikiyo was Sukemichi's son and a retainer of Minamoto no Tameyoshi. He was, so to speak, a hereditary retainer of the Minamoto clan, but the reason why Michikiyo called himself Kamata is unclear. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
