Meisen - Meisen

Japanese:
Meisen - Meisen

Silk fabric. A type of thick weave (woven with thick woven thread) that has been produced since the Edo period in Chichibu, Bushu (Saitama Prefecture) and Isesaki, Joshu (Gunma Prefecture). It was widely used as a practical fabric, mainly in plain or striped patterns. Especially after the Tenpo ban at the end of the Edo period, it gained a wide demand among the common people, and after the Meiji period, ingenuity was added to the pattern processing, and in addition to stripes, large-scale picture-patterned ikat was created by printing, discharge printing, and unraveling, and was widely used for kimono fabric, futon fabric, etc. The main production areas were Chichibu and Isesaki, but also Kiryu, Ashikaga, Hachioji, and other places. However, in recent years, people have stopped wearing kimonos as everyday wear, and with the advent of synthetic fibers and wool, kimonos have almost disappeared.
