maḥalla (English spelling) mahalla

…A block in an Islamic city. It is also called a maḥalla. It was formed by dividing the city into tribes and groups of people with the same place of origin, occupation, religion, etc., and by the settlement of each of these groups in their own districts. It has been the basic unit of daily life in the city up to the present day.
