Born in the 37th year of Jungjong's reign. During the Imjin Waeran (Bunroku Invasion), he joined the army of righteous monks organized by his teacher, Hyupjeong, and fought against the Japanese army. In 1604 (Keicho 9), he came to Japan as a peace envoy along with Sun Moon Yu, and met with Tokugawa Ieyasu and Hidetada at Fushimi Castle, negotiating the restoration of diplomatic relations and the repatriation of over 3,000 prisoners of war. He died in the 3rd year of Gwanghaegun's reign. He was 68 years old. His pen name was Rihwan. His pen names were Simei and Songun. His secular surname was Im.
