From the end of the 17th century through the 18th century, this was a type of trip to the European continent that was undertaken by the children of good English families to acquire an education, especially classical culture. The trips sometimes lasted for several years, and the destinations were major cities and famous historical sites such as Paris, but the final destination was always Italy, especially Rome, where the ruins of ancient Rome remain and which was the center of the Renaissance. In addition to sightseeing, the trips included interacting with the upper classes and academics of each country, short-term admission to universities and academies, and purchasing books and art.
