[Noun] A title specially created in and after the Heian period to give preferential treatment to close relatives of the Emperor, such as members of the imperial family, birth mothers, associate mothers, consorts, maternal grandfathers, and regents, chancellors, grand ministers, and other distinguished nobles, military officers, and monks. They were given annual official positions, ranks, and fiefs in accordance with the three princes, namely the Grand Empress Dowager, the Empress Dowager, and the Empress. Even after the annual official positions, ranks, and fiefs became meaningless in later generations, the titles continued to exist as honorary titles or a type of qualification until the end of the Edo period.
