Japanese: コーラ飲料 - こーらいんりょう

A carbonated drink with a unique flavor and color that contains an extract of the seeds of the kola tree (cola nuts). The kola tree is an evergreen tree in the family Sterculiaceae (APG classification: Malvaceae), native to West Africa. Kola nuts contain caffeine, and in West Africa the raw kernels were used as a stimulant. This was brought to Europe, where the extract was used in beverages, marking the beginning of cola drinks.

history

There are records of cola drinks being made in the 18th and 19th centuries in Scotland, England. It was Coca-Cola, which was first sold in 1886 by John S. Pemberton (1831-1887), a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It became popular among Americans thanks to its unique business practices, but especially after World War II, it expanded its market to other countries around the world and has since expanded into various regions. In Japan, Meijiya in Kyobashi, Tokyo imported a small amount of cola during the Taisho era, but it hardly sold at all. After World War II, it arrived in Japan with the US military and began to be manufactured and sold in 1957 (Showa 32). The Pepsi-Cola Company was founded in 1898, and it boasts the second-highest sales volume of cola drinks after Coca-Cola.

Manufacturing method and ingredients

Coca-Cola makes a profit from selling the concentrate. The contents of the concentrate are kept secret, but initially it was mainly an extract of coca leaves and cola seeds. Sweeteners, acidifiers, flavorings, and caramel are added for coloring, and carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide gas) is blown into it.

コーラノキの種子（コーラ・ナッツ）のエキスを含む特有の風味と色をもつ炭酸飲料。コーラノキはアオギリ科（APG分類：アオイ科）の常緑高木で、西アフリカが原産地。コーラ・ナッツはカフェインを含み、西アフリカでは生(なま)の実を興奮性のある嗜好(しこう)品として用いていた。これがヨーロッパに伝わり、エキスを飲料に用いたのがコーラ飲料の始まりである。

歴史

コーラ飲料は、イギリスのスコットランド地方で18世紀から19世紀にかけてつくられた記録がある。コーラ飲料として確立させたのは、1886年にアメリカのジョージア州アトランタの薬剤師ジョン・ペンバートンJohn S. Pemberton（1831―1887）が売り出した「コカ・コーラ」が始まりである。独特の商法でアメリカ人の間に普及したが、とくに第二次世界大戦後は世界各国に市場を伸ばし、各地に進出している。日本では大正時代に東京・京橋の明治屋が少量輸入したが、ほとんど売れなかった。第二次大戦後、アメリカ軍とともに日本に上陸し、1957年（昭和32）から製造販売された。1898年にはペプシ・コーラ会社が創立され、コカ・コーラに次ぐコーラ飲料の販売量を誇っている。
