Maidenhair spleenwort

Japanese: チャセンシダ - ちゃせんしだ（英語表記）maidenhair spleenwort

An evergreen fern of the family Pteridophyceae that grows on rocks in mountain forests and stone walls along roadsides (illustration). It has short rhizomes and clumps of leaves 10-30 cm high. The petioles are shiny purple-brown with small scales at the base. The leaf surface is simple pinnate and can have more than 30 pairs of pinnae. The pinnae are short-stalked, ovate, round-headed, and have a rounded truncated base above and wedge-shaped below, reaching up to 1.5 cm in length. The sporangia grow long along the veins and are covered by an insula. It grows in various parts of Japan and is thought to be distributed in temperate zones around the world, but diploids and tetraploids have been identified within the species and it does not appear to have a simple structure.

山林中の岩上や路傍の石垣に生えるチャセンシダ科の常緑性シダ（イラスト）。根茎は短く，高さが10～30cmの葉を叢生（そうせい）する。葉柄は光沢のある紫褐色で基部に小さな鱗片をつける。葉面は単羽状で，羽片は30対を超えることがある。羽片は短い柄をつけ，卵形，円頭，基部は上側が円い切形で下側はくさび形となり，長さ1.5cmに達する。胞子囊群は脈に沿って長く伸び，包膜におおわれる。日本の各地に生育し，世界の温暖帯に分布していることになっているが，種内に二倍体や四倍体が識別されるほか，単純な構造のものではないようである。
