A unit of volume in the imperial system. The symbol is bu. It comes from boissel, a form of the Old French unit of grain, boisse. In England, the liquid and dry units are the same, and since 1824, an imperial bushel has been defined as 8 imperial gallons or about 36,375.31 cm3 . In the United States, the bushel is used only for dry measurements. A US bushel is about 35,245.38 cm3 and is considered to be the equivalent of the Winchester bushel, a unit used in England from the 15th century to 1824. A US bushel is equal to 4 pecks, or 32 dry quarts. Two bushels make up the unit of strike. In 1912, the US Customs Court defined a "heaped bushel" as about 45,035.04 cm3 for measuring apples. Since the 13th century, bushels of various sizes and weights have existed in the British Isles to represent the goods being bought, sold, or transported. Bushel |
