Located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, north of Australia, it is the second largest island in the world. It has a long and narrow peninsula stretching from the northwest to the southeast, and a mountain range running from east to west through the center. The highest peak is Mount Jaya (5,030m) in the west. It is located in a hot and humid tropical rainforest climate area, covered with dense forests, and development is slow. The inhabitants are Papuans and Melanesians. About 1,000 different languages ​​are spoken. Most of the animals belong to the Australian region, and there are many rare species. The Portuguese arrived in 1526, and the Netherlands took possession of it in 1828. At the end of the 19th century, Germany and Britain recognized the area west of 141° east longitude as Dutch territory. The former Dutch territory is the Indonesian province of Papua and West Irian Jaya, and the area east of 141° belongs to Papua New Guinea. The area is 771,900 km2 .
