Kan'ei culture

Japanese:
Kan'ei culture
This culture was centered on the Kan'ei era (1624-1644) in the early Edo period. It inherited characteristics of Momoyama culture and played a transitional role to Genroku culture. Confucian culture is characterized by Katsura Imperial Villa in the west and Nikko Toshogu Shrine in the east, but the classical culture centered on the court of Emperor Gomizunoo and Emperor Meisho in Kyoto and the upper class townspeople is often mentioned in particular. Tofukumon'in (Wako, daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada), who entered the court as a consort with Emperor Gomizunoo, worked hard to restore cultural assets such as shrines and temples in Kyoto that had been devastated by war. Among the artists who frequented the court were representative bearers of Kan'ei culture, such as Tawaraya Sotatsu, Hon'ami Koetsu, and Suminokura Soan.
