Friedländer (English spelling) Max Jacob Friedländer

German art historian. He studied at museums in Munich, Cologne, Berlin, and other places, and later served as director of the State Gallery in Berlin, where he worked hard to develop it together with its former director, Wilhelm von Bode (1845-1929). In his later years, during the Nazi era, he moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands (after 1938), where he died. He was particularly known for his thorough research of 15th- and 16th-century Dutch and German painting, and is recognized as the highest authority in this field. He was also a leading art connoisseur. His major works include "Netherlands Painting of the 15th and 16th Centuries" (1903), "From Van Eyck to Bruegel" (1916), "Art and Art Criticism" (1942), and others.
