A newspaper published in the early Meiji period. It was launched in Tokyo on May 1, 1871 (Meiji 4) with funding from councillor Kido Takayoshi and Yamagata Tokuzo as chief editor. It was published by Tokyo Nisshindo. It was 7-8 pages long and was published twice a month at first, but every other day at the end. It provided information from government sources, as well as domestic politics, economics, education, and personnel affairs, and also devoted space to introducing overseas affairs, striving to promote modernization. Its reporters included calligrapher Cho Sanshu and Buddhist figure Shimaji Mokurai. It ceased publication on December 28, 1874 (issue no. 357). It was renamed "Akehono" on January 2 the following year, and again on June 2 of the same year to "Tokyo Akebono Shimbun."
