It is a system of chemical technology that produces various chemical products using natural gas, coke oven gas, etc. as raw materials. The main components of coke oven gas are methane (CH4 ₎ , carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen ( _H2) . The main component of natural gas is methane, which can be reacted with steam to produce synthetic gas consisting of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. For this reason, whether natural gas or coke oven gas is used as the raw material, the chemical products produced and the chemical reactions are very similar, as shown in the figure.

天然ガスやコークス炉ガスなどを原料として各種の化学製品を生産する化学技術の体系をいう。コークス炉ガスの主成分は，メタンCH₄，一酸化炭素CO，水素H₂などである。また天然ガスの主成分はメタンであるが，これを水蒸気と反応させ，一酸化炭素と水素からなる合成ガスを得ることができる。このようなわけで，天然ガスまたはコークス炉ガスのいずれを原料に用いても，生産される化学製品とその化学反応はよく似たものであり，おおむね図に示すとおりである。
