Hijiori [Hot Springs] - Hijiori

Japanese: 肘折[温泉] - ひじおり
Hijiori [Hot Springs] - Hijiori
A hot spring in Okura Village, Mogami County, central Yamagata Prefecture. It is located at the bottom of the Hijiori Caldera in the middle reaches of the Dozan River, a tributary of the Mogami River, on the northeastern foot of Mt. Gassan. The spring contains saltwater and has a temperature of 32-82°C. It is said to have first been discovered during either the Daido period (806-810) or the Meitoku period (1390-94), and since the Edo period it has flourished as one of the trailheads for the Dewa Sanzan mountains. The name of the hot spring comes from the story that Jizo (also called an old monk or a young boy) born in the nearby Jizokura warehouse broke his elbow at birth and had it healed in the hot spring. There are 14 hot springs, including one excavated after 1926, centered around the public baths of "Kizu no Yu" and "Senki no Yu," and the amount of hot water is abundant.
