A mine that produces silver. Silver is usually produced as a sulfide, along with lead, zinc, copper, etc. The silver mines in the Andes Mountains of Peru are world famous and date back to the Inca Empire. Other major mines are in Mexico, the United States, Canada, the former Soviet Union, and Japan, where many mines have been developed since the early modern period. In 1990, the world's silver production was 14,600 tons, with the major producers being Mexico (2,500 tons), the United States (2,000 tons), Peru (1,800 tons), the Soviet Union (1,500 tons), and Canada (1,300 tons). The world's silver reserves are about 420,000 tons, with the major producers being the United States (72,000 tons), the Soviet Union (50,000 tons), Canada (47,000 tons), Mexico (40,000 tons), and Peru (37,000 tons).
