A global construction machinery company. Established in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1921 after spinning off from Takeuchi Mining. After developing the first domestically produced tractor prototype and bulldozer, the company quickly moved into bulldozer production after World War II, and dominated the domestic market, competing globally with Caterpillar Inc. of the United States. The company produces a wide range of construction machinery and industrial vehicles, including shovels, graders, and forklifts. The company has been concentrating on its core business, selling off its semiconductor manufacturing subsidiary in 2006 and its agricultural and forestry machinery business in 2007. Head office in Tokyo, factories in Awazu, Osaka, Oyama, and other locations. In 1991, the company was known as Komatsu. In 2011, the company's capital was 67.8 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 1.8431 trillion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is 88% for construction machinery and vehicles, and 12% for industrial machinery and others. Overseas sales ratio is 81%.
