Walser, Martin
Born: March 24, 1927. Wasserburg, Lake Constance. German novelist. Served in the Second World War, and after being demobilized, entered university and began writing. In 1955, he won the '47 Group Prize. Since his Kafka-esque collection of short stories Ein Flugzeug über dem Haus (1955), he has consistently published works of social criticism. In 1987, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of West Germany. His major works include the novels Ehen in Philippsburg (57), Halbzeit (60), Das Einhorn (66), Sturz (73), which together with the previous two works form a trilogy, and the plays Eiche und Angora (62) and Der schwarze Schwan (64).

Died December 25, 1956, Herisau Swiss poet and novelist. After working in various professions, he began his life as a writer in Berlin. He spent the rest of his life in a psychiatric hospital from 1933. His writing, which uses detailed impressionistic descriptions to express delicate emotions such as infantile reverie and incompetent piety, mixed with romantic irony, has earned him many admirers, including Kafka. In addition to his short works, he wrote novels such as Geschwister Tanner (1907) and Jakob von Gunten (09).
