A mammal of the Bovidae family in the order Artiodactyla. Known species include the Asian water buffalo, African buffalo, water buffalo, anoa, tamarawo, and mountain anoa. The Asian water buffalo stands 1.6-1.9m tall at the shoulder, and weighs about 1200kg for males and 800kg for females. Its body color is blackish-gray, and its horns are crescent-shaped with ridges. Wild species are found in parts of India, Nepal, Indochina, and other areas, and live in colonies near water. It is aggressive. Water buffalo are widely kept as livestock in Southeast Asia and southern Europe, for transportation and for paddy cultivation. They can withstand rough breeding and are resistant to tropical endemic diseases. The African water buffalo stands about 1.0-1.7m tall at the shoulder, and is a little browner than the previous species. They are found in sub-Saharan Africa, and live in colonies, and sometimes form large herds seasonally.

偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ウシ科の哺乳(ほにゅう)類。アジアスイギュウ，アフリカスイギュウ，スイギュウ，アノア，タマラオ，ヤマアノアなどが知られる。アジアスイギュウは肩高1.6〜1.9m，体重はオス1200kg，メス800kgほど。体色は黒灰色，角は三日月形で隆起線がある。野生種はインドの一部，ネパール，インドシナなどに分布し，水辺に群生。気が荒い。スイギュウは家畜として東南アジア，南欧などで広く飼われ，運搬用，水田耕作用。粗放な飼育管理にも耐え，熱帯性風土病に対しても抵抗力が強い。アフリカスイギュウは肩高1.0〜1.7mほどで，前種よりいくらか褐色が強い。サハラ以南のアフリカに分布し，群生，季節的に大群を作ることがある。
