1109?‐85 The first king of Portugal, who established the Burgundian dynasty. Reigned from 1139 to 1185. Also known as Afonso Henriques. Born in Coimbra to Count Henry of Burgundy and Teresa, daughter of King Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile. After the death of his father Henry, who had been given the County of Portugal between the Minho and Tagus rivers as a fief by Alfonso VI, his mother Teresa inherited the rule of the county. In 1128, Afonso Henriques defeated his mother's army with the support of the nobles of the territory who were dissatisfied with Teresa, who had close ties to the Galician nobility, and named himself Count of Portugal.
