The first king of Portugal, who established the Burgundian dynasty. Reigned from 1139 to 1185. Also known as Afonso Henriques. Born in Coimbra to Count Henry of Burgundy and Teresa, daughter of King Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile. After the death of his father Henry, who had been given the County of Portugal between the Minho and Tagus rivers as a fief by Alfonso VI, his mother Teresa inherited the rule of the county. In 1128, Afonso Henriques defeated his mother's army with the support of the nobles of the territory who were dissatisfied with Teresa, who had close ties to the Galician nobility, and named himself Count of Portugal.

ブルゴーニュ朝を開いたポルトガル初代の国王。在位1139‐85年。アフォンソ･エンリケスとも呼ばれる。ブルゴーニュ出身のアンリ伯とレオン･カスティリャ王アルフォンソ6世の娘テレサの間にコインブラで生まれた。アルフォンソ6世からミーニョ川とテージョ川との間のポルトゥカレ伯領を封土として譲渡されていた父アンリの死後，母親テレサがその統治権を受け継いだが，1128年アフォンソ･エンリケスは，ガリシア貴族と深いつながりを持つテレサに不満を抱いていた領内の貴族の支持を得て母親の軍隊を破り，ポルトゥカレ伯を名のった。
