Flammable fibers include vegetable fibers such as cotton and rayon, as well as polypropylene, acrylic, and polyester, which burn up in a short time when ignited. In contrast, flame-retardant fibers, which are difficult to burn, burn while exposed to flame, but have the property of naturally extinguishing when removed from the flame. Wool has the property of naturally extinguishing, so it is classified as semi-flame-retardant. Vinyl chloride, polychlor (a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl alcohol), and modacrylic, which have chlorine in their molecules, are flame-retardant fibers that burn in a semi-molten state.
