Bogor - Bogor (English spelling)

Bogor - Bogor (English spelling)

A city in the west of Java, Indonesia. It is located 50 km south of Jakarta, at an altitude of 265 m in the valley between the volcanoes Salak (2,211 m) and Gede (2,958 m). Population: 247,409 (1980), 5,162,044 (2018 estimate). Although it receives a lot of precipitation, exceeding 4,000 mm per year, the temperature is lower than Jakarta and is more bearable. During the Dutch colonial period, it was opened in 1745 as a place to escape the heat of Jakarta, and was named Bui tenzorg (Peaceful Land) after the establishment of the Governor's House and a tropical botanical garden. Since then, it has been the largest white residential area on the island. The Bogor Botanical Gardens, established in 1817, are one of the largest in the world, cultivating nearly 10,000 species of plants, and are equipped with a leaf museum, a library, and a tropical plant cultivation center. After World War II, Bogor Agricultural University was founded around these facilities. Recently, the number of people commuting to Jakarta by national railway has increased. The area around Puncak Pass (1,060 meters) east of Bogor has been developed as a high-altitude resort, with villas and bungalows scattered about.
