Until 1924, it was called Muhammara. It is a port city in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran. It is located on the upper reaches of the Shatt al-Arab River, 105 km from the Persian Gulf, near the confluence with the Qarun River, on the right bank of the river. It is one of Iran's major trading ports, and developed greatly during World War II when it was connected to the Trans-Iranian Railway. The city is lined with sturdy buildings, and date palms are cultivated in the surrounding area. It was destroyed by Turkish attacks in 1837, and became Persian territory in 1847, but in practice it continued to be ruled by local tribal chiefs, and in 1924 it came under the jurisdiction of the central government. During the Iran-Iraq War, it was occupied by Iraq from 1880 to 1982. Its population in 1976 was about 150,000.
