Ara Pacis (English spelling)

Japanese: アラ･パキス（英語表記）Ara Pacis

The name means "Altar of Peace." The construction of this altar was proposed by the Senate in 13 BC to commemorate Emperor Augustus' triumphal return from Spain and Gaul, and was completed on January 30, 9 BC in the Field of Mars in Rome. It has now been restored using parts unearthed during excavations on the left bank of the Tiber River in Rome since 1568. The altar is surrounded by a rectangular wall measuring 11.62m east to west and 10.55m north to south. The exterior of the wall is divided into two sections, with the lower section of the wainscoting featuring arabesque patterns and the upper section depicting scenes with historical, mythological and allegorical themes in relief.

〈平和の祭壇〉の意味。アウグストゥス帝のヒスパニアとガリアからの凱旋を記念して元老院が前13年に建造を発議し，前9年1月30日にローマのマルスの野に完成した祭壇。現在ローマのテベレ川左岸に1568年以来の発掘で出土した部材により復元されている。東西11.62m，南北10.55mの矩形周壁で囲まれた中に祭壇がある。周壁外面は，上下2段に分かれ，腰羽目部分の下段には唐草文が，上段には歴史，神話，寓意の主題を有する場面が浮彫で表されている。
