A folk event held every year on November 5th in England. In 1605, the Gun Powder Plot, a plot by Catholics to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I, was uncovered, and Guy Fawkes (1570-1606), believed to be the perpetrator, was arrested. To commemorate this, large bonfires are lit in the streets, and a strange straw doll made to look like Guy Fawkes is set on fire with fireworks and thrown into the fire. This has long been a custom in which large bonfires are lit in the streets to celebrate the discovery of the plot and the safety of the king.
