A strategic military location on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, overlooking the Straits of Tiran. There are remains of artillery batteries from the Ottoman Turkish period, and it was under the jurisdiction of the United Nations from 1957 to 1967, but in May 1967 Egypt closed the Straits of Tiran to Israel, which marked the beginning of the Third Arab-Israeli War. After the war, it came under Israeli occupation and was called Ophira. It became the largest naval base in the Sinai Peninsula. On April 25, 1982, a ceremony was held to hand it over to Egypt as the final site of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
