Sharm al-Shaykh

A strategic military location on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, overlooking the Straits of Tiran. There are remains of artillery batteries from the Ottoman Turkish period, and it was under the jurisdiction of the United Nations from 1957 to 1967, but in May 1967 Egypt closed the Straits of Tiran to Israel, which marked the beginning of the Third Arab-Israeli War. After the war, it came under Israeli occupation and was called Ophira. It became the largest naval base in the Sinai Peninsula. On April 25, 1982, a ceremony was held to hand it over to Egypt as the final site of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty.

シナイ半島南端，ティラン海峡にのぞむ軍事的要衝。オスマン･トルコ時代の砲台跡があり，1957‐67年は国連軍の管轄下にあったが，67年5月エジプトはイスラエルに対するティラン海峡封鎖を行い，これが第3次中東戦争の発端となった。戦後イスラエルの占領地となり，オーフィラとよばれ，シナイ半島最大の海軍基地となった。82年4月25日エジプト･イスラエル平和条約にもとづく最後の引渡し地としてエジプトへの返還式が行われた。
