A sulfate mineral. Also called selenite. A mass of fine gypsum crystals, mostly white. Pure selenite is translucent. It occurs in layers in sedimentary rocks, and is associated with salt deposits such as halite and petroleum deposits, and also coexists with limestone. It may contain impurities such as clay minerals, calcite, anhydrite, and limonite. It was used in ancient Egypt and Greece for statues and crafts. It is still mined for this purpose in Italy and other places. High-quality selenite is prized as a material for sculptures, but in Japan, there are no halite deposits, so no selenite suitable for this purpose is found. It is said to have been named after the Egyptian place name Alabastron.
