Holst, I.

…British composer. Descendant of a Swedish family that emigrated to England in 1807. Graduated from the Royal College of Music in London. In 1905, he became a music teacher at St. Paul's Girls' School in Hammersmith, London, where he remained until his death, devoting himself to composing. Because he was too busy teaching during the week, he would attend school on Sundays and devote the whole day to composing in the music classroom. His orchestral suite The Planets (1916) was well received from the time of its premiere, but with the advent of the stereo system, it became explosively popular, and is now frequently performed not only on records but also at concerts. …
