Located in central Tokyo, this city is to the west of Tachikawa City. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies part of the Musashino Plateau, with the Tama River flowing through the south. Until the early Showa period, it was a farming area with a thriving silkworm farm, but after the Sino-Japanese War of 1937, the military industry developed, centered around Tachikawa Airfield. After World War II, it became part of a US military base, and an industrial park was created in accordance with the Factory Attraction Ordinance enacted in 1957, with factories producing transportation machinery and electrical equipment and other products being built there. With the Ome Line, Hachiko Line, Itsukaichi Line, and Seibu Haijima Line passing through the area, residential development has progressed rapidly, and the number of commuters to Tokyo's wards, Tachikawa, and Hachioji is also increasing. 17.34 km2 . 112,297 people (2010). 東京都中部,立川市西隣の市。1954年市制。武蔵野台地の一部を占め,南部を多摩川が流れる。昭和初期までは養蚕の盛んな農村地帯であったが,1937年の日中戦争後立川飛行場を中心とする軍需産業が発達。第2次世界大戦後は米軍基地の一部となり,1957年制定された工場誘致条例により,工業団地が造成され,輸送用機械器具,電気機械器具などの工場が立地。青梅(おうめ)線,八高線,五日市線,西武拝島線が通じて急速に宅地化が進み,東京都区部,立川,八王子への通勤者も増加している。17.34km2。11万2297人(2010)。
