A port city in southern Benin facing the Gulf of Benin, a branch of the Gulf of Guinea. Capital of the Atlantique department. Benin's largest commercial and industrial center, a deep-water port was completed in 1965 to replace the pier that had been there since colonial times. It handles imports and exports not only for Benin but also for Niger and Nigeria. Its main exports are groundnuts, palm oil, and cotton. Niger's uranium is also exported from here. It is a key location for rail and road transport. Industries include brewing, textiles, and palm oil production. Oil fields have been discovered offshore. There is an international airport.
