Japanese: 暗きょ排水(暗渠排水) - あんきょはいすい（英語表記）underdrainage

Underground drainage is carried out using suction pipes (underdrains) buried underground in the field to drain excess moisture from cultivated land and lower the groundwater level. It is widely practiced worldwide in paddy fields, fields, orchards, etc., to ensure healthy crop growth and to maintain appropriate soil moisture for the convenience of agricultural work. In recent years, it has become an especially important drainage method when field crops are introduced into paddy fields. Underdrainage is carried out by collecting water that descends due to gravity in a suction pipe (the pipe and the buried trench are called the suction pipe) buried about 60 to 120 cm underground (Figure).

耕地の過剰な水分を排水するとともに，地下水位を下げるために，圃場（ほじよう）内の地下に埋設した吸水管(暗きょ)を用いて地下排水を行うこと。水田や畑，樹園地などにおいて，作物の健全な生育をはかり，また農作業の便のために適当な土壌水分状態を保つことを目的として世界的に広く行われている。近年，水田への畑作物の導入にあたってはとくに重要な排水手段となっている。暗きょ排水は，重力で降下する水を，地下約60～120cmの深さに埋設した吸水管(この管と埋設してある溝を含めて吸水きょと称する)に集めて行う（図）。
