Japanese: コトネアスター - ことねあすたー

A general term for the genus Sharinto in the family Rosaceae (APG classification: Rosaceae). Evergreen or deciduous shrubs, occasionally small trees. There are about 50 species in Europe, North Africa, and Asia, with many found in western China and the Himalayas. There are no native species in Japan, but many species have been imported.

C. franchetii Bois, native to western China and Tibet, is also known as Franchet's Sharintou. Its leaves are ovate, 2.5-3 cm long, yellowish-white on the underside, and densely covered with short hairs. Its flowers are small and white. Its fruits are pear-shaped, about 7 mm in diameter, and ripen red in October. C. horizontalis Decne., native to western China, has horizontally spreading branches and many branches. Its leaves are broadly elliptical, 0.5-1.5 cm long. It produces 1-2 pale pink florets in June, and the fruits, about 5 mm in diameter, ripen red in October. C. salicifolius Fr., native to western China, has oblong leaves, 3-8 cm long, grayish-white on the underside, and soft hairs. It produces many small white flowers in corymbs in June. The fruits are about 6 mm in diameter and ripen red. All of these were introduced to Japan in the early Showa period, but the Nepalese native C. rotundifolia Wall. var. lanata Schneid. was introduced in the early Meiji period. The leaves are broadly elliptical or broadly obovate, 8-12 mm long, and hairy on the underside. The flowers are white with pale pink centers. The fruits ripen red.

It is cultivated as a garden tree or potted plant, and its flowers and fruits are appreciated. It is cold-resistant, easy to cultivate, and grows well in sunny, moist areas. It is propagated by seeds or cuttings.

サンゴカマツカC. franchetii Boisは中国西部、チベット原産で、フランシェシャリントウともいい、葉は卵形、長さ2.5～3センチメートルで、裏面は黄白色で短毛を密生する。花は小さく、白色。果実は径約7ミリメートルのなし状果で、10月に赤く熟す。ベニシタンC. horizontalis Decne.は中国西部原産で、枝が水平に広がり、分枝が多い。葉は広楕円(こうだえん)形で、長さは0.5～1.5センチメートルと小さい。6月に淡紅色の小花を1～2個つけ、10月に径約5ミリメートルの果実が赤く熟す。ヤナギバシャリントウC. salicifolius Fr.は中国西部原産で、葉は長楕円形、長さ3～8センチメートル、裏面は灰白色で軟毛がある。6月に多数の小さい白色花が散房花序につく。果実は径約6ミリメートルで赤く熟す。これらはいずれも昭和初年に日本に入ったが、ネパール原産のシャリントウC. rotundifolia Wall. var. lanata Schneid.は明治初年に入ってきた。葉は広楕円形ないし広倒卵形、長さ8～12ミリメートルで裏面に毛があり、花は白色で中央が淡紅色。果実は赤く熟す。

　庭木や鉢植えとして栽培し、花や果実を観賞する。耐寒性があり、栽培は容易で、日当りのよい適湿地でよく育つ。繁殖は実生(みしょう)または挿木による。
