The capital of the state of Sergipe in northeastern Brazil. It is a port city on the Atlantic coast, about 270 km north-northeast of Salvador, on the right bank of the Continguiva River, about 10 km upstream from the mouth of the river. It was founded in 1855. It is the commercial and industrial center of the state, distributing and processing leather, bananas, cassava, beans, mangoes, cashew nuts, salt, cotton, sugar cane, etc. Limestone is produced in the surrounding area, and chemical plants are located there. The port is an excellent anchorage, but due to a sandbar at the mouth of the river, ships with a draft of more than 4 meters cannot enter the port. It is the home of the Federal University of Sergipe (1967). The main road and railway linking Recife and Salvador pass through the city. Population: 418,671 (1990 estimate).
