Roger Garaudy

French philosopher. Studied at the Sorbonne. Joined the Communist Party in 1933, and from 1956 served as a member of the party's Politburo in charge of the ideology department (until 1968). He was a strong defender of Marxism-Leninism, but after criticizing Stalin he worked to revive Marxist philosophy, and in search of a new path to socialism he addressed a wide range of cultural issues, including religion, leading to his expulsion from the party in 1970. Many of his later works, including "Marxism in the Twentieth Century," have been introduced in Japan. [Takeuchi Yoshitomo]
