A Chinese daily newspaper. First published in Shanghai in June 1946. It was suspended due to the repression of the Chiang Kai-shek regime, and relaunched in Beijing in July 1949. In 1952, it became a joint organ of the various democratic parties. During the Hundred Schools of Controversy in 1957, it was heavily criticized as a right-wing newspaper for attacking the one-party dictatorship of the Chinese Communist Party, and a major reshuffle of the paper and personnel under President Zhang Bojun was carried out. It now reports directly to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and is considered a "science and education specialty paper." It has four pages, costs 4 bu (0.04 yuan) per copy, or 1 yuan per month, and has a circulation of 1.4 million copies. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
