A military commander from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period. The ancestor of the Adachi clan, a powerful vassal of the Kamakura period. The Sonpi Bunmyaku states that he was the son of Onoda Kanemori, a member of the Uona lineage of the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan, but this is not very reliable. As the husband of Minamoto no Yoritomo's wet nurse, Hiki no Ama, he was a meritorious retainer who served close to Yoritomo even before he raised an army in 1180 (Jisho 4). He served as the magistrate of Kozuke Province (Gunma Prefecture) and the guardian of Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture). In 1199 (Shoji 1), upon Yoritomo's death, he became a monk and took the name Rensei, but was chosen as a member of the council of senior retainers that was organized in the same year, and was also actively involved in the impeachment of Kajiwara Kagetoki, who was an assistant to Minamoto no Yoriie, making him one of the core members of the vassal's power. <References> Yasuda Motohisa, "The Kamakura Shogunate - The People Who Carried Its Government"

平安末・鎌倉前期の武将。鎌倉時代の有力御家人安達氏の祖。『尊卑分脈』は藤原北家魚名流の小野田兼盛の子とするが,信憑性に乏しい。源頼朝の乳母比企尼の婿であったことから,治承4(1180)年の挙兵以前より頼朝の側近くに仕えた功臣。上野国(群馬県)の奉行人や三河国(愛知県)の守護を務める。正治1(1199)年,頼朝の死により出家して蓮西と号したが,同年組織された宿老会議のメンバーに選ばれ,さらに源頼家の補佐役であった梶原景時の弾劾にも積極的に関与するなど,御家人勢力の中核のひとりであった。<参考文献>安田元久『鎌倉幕府―その政権を担った人々―』
