An indigenous people who live in southern Chile, stretching from about latitude 47°30′ south to the islands west of Tierra del Fuego. The glaciers at the southern end of the Andes Mountains approach to the east, and the foothills are a rainy region with dense forests. The coast, on the other hand, is a complex ria coastline with countless islands floating in the sea. Due to the cold climate and topographical conditions, agriculture is impossible, and the main occupations of the people are fishing and hunting. They mainly collect shellfish and sea urchins, and hunt seals, cormorants, penguins, and ducks, as well as dolphins, guanacos (camelidae), fish, and the fruits of some wild plants.
