Arakan [State] (English spelling)

Japanese: アラカン[州]（英語表記）Arakan

One of the seven states in the Union of Myanmar. Currently known as Rakhine State. Its establishment was recognized at the same time as the establishment of the new constitution in 1973. Administratively, it is divided into 17 townships, with the state capital, Sittwe, as well as major cities such as Kyaukphyu and Thandwe. Although it borders Bangladesh across the Naf River, it is separated from central Myanmar by the Arakan Mountains. It has an area of 37,000 ^km2 and a population of 2.48 million (1994). It has a long coastline of 640 km, but the width of the plains is narrow, at 150 km in the north and 24 km in the south.

ミャンマー連邦に含まれる七つの州の一つ。現ラキン州。1973年の新憲法制定と同時に設置が認められた。行政的には17郡に細分され，州都シットゥエ以外に，主要都市としてチャウピュー，タンドゥエなどがある。バングラデシュとはナーフ川を隔てて隣接しているものの，ミャンマー中央部とはアラカン山脈によって切断されている。面積3万7000km²，人口248万(1994)。海岸線は640kmと長いが，平野部の幅は北部で150km，南部で24kmと狭い。
