A former town in Higashitagawa-gun, in the center of the Shonai Plain, in northwest Yamagata Prefecture. It is a typical single-crop rice field area with wide rice paddies, and agricultural machinery is also manufactured here. The center is Fujishima along the Uetsu Main Line. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Tsuruoka City along with Atsumi-cho in Nishitagawa-gun, Kushibiki-cho in Higashitagawa-gun, Haguro-cho, and Asahi-mura in Higashitagawa-gun. 63.22 km2 .
