A monthly magazine first published by Harper Brothers in New York in 1850. At first, it attracted the interest of British writers as a broad-based literary magazine, with contributions from Dickens, Thackeray, Trollope, T. Hardy, and others, but from around 1870, it began to attract more American writers, including Melville, H. James, Howells, and Mark Twain. In the 20th century, it began to deal more with political and social issues, clearly expressing a liberal stance. [Masao Shimura] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
