Jinbei - Jinbei

Japanese: 甚兵衛 - じんべえ
Jinbei - Jinbei
Also written as jinbei. (1) Generally called jinbe, it is an abbreviation of jinbei haori. The name is said to have come from jinbaori, or from the first maker jinbei. It is a sleeveless haori with cotton padding that was once worn by lower-ranking samurai and commoners, and is long enough to cover the knees. It is mainly worn indoors. (2) A top with tube sleeves worn directly against the skin in the summer that began to be popular in the Kansai region in the 19th century. It is joined in front and tied with a string. It is worn by both adults and children, and is often made of linen in a single layer. After World War II, it was revived as everyday summer wear for older men. (→ Kata-ginu)
