...The name is based on the fact that the Dutch painter Pieter van Laer (c. 1599-c. 1642), a representative of the genre, was nicknamed Bamboccio (meaning "comical doll") in Italy because of his physical disability. Van Laer, who moved to Rome around 1625, assimilated the influence of Caravaggio and developed a unique genre of painting on the border between genre and landscape painting, which focused on the daily life of ordinary people in the city of Rome and the surrounding countryside. He became a leading figure in the community of northern painters studying in the city called Bentvogel (Dutch for "flock of birds"). He produced many followers, including J. Miel, J. Lingelbach, M. Swerts, and M. Cerquozzi. Because of their lawless and dissolute lifestyle and the vulgarity of their subjects, they were forbidden from attending the Academy of St. Luke and from painting in the church. However, the large number of works that survive show that their paintings enjoyed widespread popularity among the general public, despite the fierce criticism from painters and critics in the classical camp. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Bambocciate" are listed below.
