A city in the southeastern part of Hiroshima prefecture facing the Seto Inland Sea. It was incorporated as a city in 1916. The main urban area is in the delta of the Ashida River, where the Sanyo Main Line, Shinkansen, and Sanyo Expressway pass through and the Fukuen Line branches off. In 1966 it merged with Matsunaga City to the west. It was once the outer port of Bingo Province in the past, but in 1619 Mizuno Katsunari built Fukuyama Castle and it developed as a castle town. A large steelworks moved in in 1961, and in 1963 Fukuyama Port was designated a special industrial development area and an important harbor, leading to further development and becoming the core of the Setouchi industrial region. Geta (wooden clogs) and koto (Japanese harp) are local specialties. Fukuyama University, Fukuyama Castle ruins (historic site), Tomo, Sensui Island, and Nunakuma Shrine are located here. In February 2003, the towns of Niichi and Utsumi in Ashina County were incorporated, in February 2005 the town of Numakuma in Numakuma County, and in March 2006 the town of Kannabe in Fukayasu County was incorporated. Area: 518.14 km2 . Population: 461,357 (2010). → Related topics Kamo | Kibitsu Shrine | Fukuen Line Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
